Rovers Return were victorious in a gloriously sunny day of organised mayhem and fun at Mabo KO (Mablethorpe's very own It's A Knockout). Photos are now in the Gallery. Seven teams from local businesses and organisations re-kindled the spirit of the hit TV show, which ran from 1966 to 1982 and again from 1999 to 2001. Although the rivalry was friendly, the grit and determination on the faces of the competitors showed as they rolled through bubbles, leaped over obstacles, jumped through hoops and donned crazy costumes. The event was orgainised by Dave Fenton, who described it as "the whackiest event to hit Mablethorpe", and he wasn't far wrong. Although the winners on the day were the Rovers Return (Sutton Rovers Football Club), perhaps the biggest long-term winners will be the charities to whom profits will be donated. Age Concern Lindsey and Furnichurch will be providing a Christmas Food Hamper to lift the hearts and give some Christmas cheer to under-privileged people living in Mablethorpe and the surrounding area.
Dave was successful in securing a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to cover the costs of organising the event. This, together with generous donations from local sponsors, ensured that the event was able to run and will go a significant way toward organising a similar event for 2010.
During the lunch break and afternoon session the crowds of supporters and teams had chance to meet 'Borat', or at least a very good impersonation of him, in the form of Ben from Boston.
