"I really enjoy forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don't notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is..."
So said David Byrne in the movie True Stories.
I think after being away from the town for a couple of years I could look at it with a fresh pair of eyes again. We were in town for the Bank Holiday weekend. A good time to see Mablethorpe at its best and worst. So here's a few thoughts about the town from what we saw.
The beach is still pretty darned good. You can complain all you want about the quality of the sand after the beach renewals (Is that still an issue? I know it was at one time) but you look to the North from the pullover and all those miles of sand is a excellent sight something for the town to be rightly very proud of.
The Railway Access. As a Railway enthusiast this was something I was pleased to see and is something that could be expanded on. Adding the old goods yard gate is a step in the right direction. Perhaps some interpretive signboards to go with everything as well?
The High Street that I seem to remember as always so crowded and claustrophobic didn't seem so bad this year. I don't know if there were less folks about or new parking restrictions or what but with less folks to fight past on the pavement and no parked cars to bump into the walk around town was enjoyable.
We still have good fish 'n' chip shops in town. The chips we had in Mabo were better than any we had while we were in England. I even had some in one of Gordon Ramsays restaurants in London. How about a best chippy in Mablethorpe competition?
Anyway that's just a few comments on how I saw the town while I was here.
