Trawling around the internet looking for stuff on the pre-history of Mablethorpe I came across this article with photographs in the "Skegness Magazine" (something I'd never heard of) they seem to have their act together on local history...

I've seen that chap with his metal detector! Now I know what he is researching. What a great article!

Anyone find it somewhat ironic that all this information is on a Skegness website? I am still working on the Mablethorpe version....

I had a conversation with one of the Hospital Transport drivers yesterday about Mabo. He informed me that the name of our town has changed 16 times in the past. He also told me that half of Mabo was owned by a chap called "Fitzwilliam" and the street was named after him.I was also informed that there used to be 9 Butchers shops in Mabo and they were kept busy, along with quite a few Corner Shops.
This chap is called Fred, his wife is called Pat and they used to have several stalls in the Red Door Market, selling Lingerie and Hosiery, Slippers and many other items. Pat also worked in the Post Office. He told me so many interesting things, yet I have forgotten some of them. There used to be a once a year event in the town at Queens Park. The bridge over the Lake used to be lit up with Fairy Lights. There used to be Fireworks on the central Island and lots of side stalls around the Park.etc. There was a good Community Spirit. It was a very interesting journey to Boston and back!!

We must find out because it does sound like a lot of changes. I really must get to our Library and try to confirm some of these facts although I don't yet know when things will be back to normal.
